The 1984 Honda XR500 represents an interesting point in Honda’s four-stroke off-road history. By the mid-1980s, Honda had already established the XR name as a benchmark for dependable trail and enduro machinery, but the big-bore class was changing quickly. The XR500 was about to give way to the larger XR600 generation, making the 1984 model one of the final examples of Honda’s 500-class thumper.
At the heart of the XR500 was its big air-cooled single-cylinder four-stroke engine. Rather than chasing the explosive power delivery of contemporary two-stroke motocross bikes, the XR delivered strong, usable torque that suited fire trails, enduros, hill climbs and long days in the bush. For riders accustomed to lightweight two-strokes, the big Honda could feel substantial, but once moving its broad power delivery and ability to find traction made it an extremely effective off-road motorcycle.
Honda’s RFVC — Radial Four Valve Combustion — cylinder-head technology was an important feature of the period. The four-valve arrangement was designed to improve breathing while retaining the rugged simplicity expected from an XR. Starting a large four-stroke single could still become an art form, however, particularly when the engine was hot or the carburetion was not correctly adjusted. Owners restoring one today should pay particular attention to the intake system, jetting and condition of the XR500 carburettor and induction components before blaming the motorcycle’s temperament.
The chassis also reflects how quickly off-road suspension was developing during the early 1980s. Long-travel suspension and Honda’s Pro-Link rear suspension gave the XR serious capability away from formed roads. Four decades later, however, suspension condition matters considerably more than catalogue specifications. Old seals, tired springs, worn bushes and contaminated oil can transform a good XR into a vague-handling handful. Checking the front forks and suspension components and properly servicing the Pro-Link rear suspension system can make an enormous difference to a surviving machine.
Another area worth inspecting is the final drive. Big four-stroke torque, dirt and decades of use are not particularly kind to chains and sprockets. Hooked sprocket teeth, stiff chain links and incorrect gearing are common issues on old off-road motorcycles, so the chain and sprocket setup deserves attention during any XR500 recommissioning.
For vintage owners, originality can also be a challenge. XR models were working motorcycles, and many spent their lives being modified, repaired and ridden hard rather than preserved. Exhausts, plastics, tanks, handlebars, seats and controls may have been replaced several times. A mechanically sound but cosmetically imperfect XR500 can therefore be every bit as interesting as a showroom restoration.
The 1984 XR500 sits in a particularly appealing historical position: old-school enough to retain the character of Honda’s early big-bore four-strokes, yet advanced enough to show where the legendary XR600 was heading. Today it remains a wonderfully simple proposition — a large air-cooled single, plenty of torque, long-travel suspension and very little unnecessary machinery between the rider and the dirt.
