Vintage Motorcycle Forks and Components

Fork Seal and Bush Replacement

  5. Inspect the fork tube, lower leg and internal components for damage.
  6. Replace worn seals, dust seals, guide bushes and slide bushes.

  8. Refill each fork leg with the specified oil quantity or oil height.
  9. Align the fork legs, axle and front wheel before tightening all fasteners.

Fork Springs

Fork springs support the weight of the motorcycle and rider. Springs that are too soft can cause excessive sag and frequent bottoming, while springs that are too firm can reduce front-wheel grip and make the suspension feel harsh.

Check the spring free length against the workshop specification. Springs that are shorter than the service limit should normally be replaced.

Progressive Springs

Progressive fork springs become firmer as they compress and may provide a softer initial movement with greater resistance later in the stroke.

Straight-Rate Springs
