Motorcycle chains and sprockets transfer power from the engine to the rear wheel and are among the hardest-working components on any vintage motocross, enduro or trail motorcycle. Keeping them in good condition improves reliability, power delivery and helps reduce wear on the transmission.

Chains and sprockets naturally wear together over time, so replacing both as a matched set is generally recommended. Fitting a new chain to worn sprockets, or new sprockets to a worn chain, can significantly shorten the service life of the new components.

Chain Sizes

Common chain sizes found on vintage motorcycles include 420, 428, 520, 525 and 530. The correct size, length and strength depends on the motorcycle's make, model and year, so always confirm the manufacturer's specifications before ordering replacement parts.

Chain Types

Standard, O-ring and X-ring chains are available for most motorcycles. Standard chains closely match many original vintage applications, while sealed O-ring and X-ring chains provide improved protection against dirt and moisture for longer service life.

Sprocket Selection

Front and rear sprockets are available in a range of tooth counts to suit different riding conditions. Increasing the rear sprocket size or reducing the front sprocket size provides lower gearing for improved acceleration, while the opposite provides taller gearing for higher-speed riding.

Maintenance

Regularly inspect the chain for wear, stiff links and correct adjustment. Clean and lubricate the chain after riding, particularly in muddy or wet conditions, and replace worn or hooked sprockets before they damage new drivetrain components.
