Steel fuel tanks were commonly fitted to vintage trail, enduro and road-based motorcycles. They are strong and can often be repaired, but they may develop internal rust, dents, split seams or damaged mounting points.
Before reusing a steel tank, inspect the inside for corrosion and loose scale that could contaminate the fuel tap, fuel line or carburettor.
Plastic fuel tanks are widely used on motocross and off-road motorcycles because they are lightweight and resistant to denting.
Older plastic tanks may fade, swell, crack around mounting points or develop leaks near threaded inserts and fuel-tap fittings.

Confirm the motorcycle make, model and production year before ordering a replacement tank. Tanks from visually similar models may use different frame mounts, seat profiles, fuel taps or side-panel shapes.
Check whether the tank requires one or two fuel taps, the thread size of the tap fitting, the location of the outlet and whether the original fuel cap can be reused.
Also confirm that the tank clears the steering head, handlebars, forks, frame, seat and surrounding bodywork through the full steering range.
The fuel cap must seal correctly while still allowing the tank to breathe. A damaged cap seal can allow fuel to leak, while a blocked breather can restrict fuel flow and cause the engine to stop after running for a short period.
Inspect the fuel tap for leaks, blocked passages, damaged threads and worn seals. Check that the reserve position operates correctly and that the filter screen is clean and undamaged.

Regularly inspect the tank, mounting points, fuel cap, fuel tap, breather hose and fuel line. Replace hardened hoses, cracked mounting rubbers and damaged seals before they cause a fuel leak.
Steel tanks should be kept clean and dry internally when stored. Plastic tanks should be protected from excessive heat and checked for stress cracks around mounting points and threaded fittings.
Fuel filters can help protect the carburettor, but they should not be used as a substitute for repairing a rusty or contaminated tank.
